Jane Whelan: What I’ve learnt from decades in property management

‘Just when you think you’ve seen and heard everything, something comes up that completely amazes you.’

With over 37 years’ experience across all realms of real estate, and having operated her own office, Jane is an adept negotiator who knows a thing or two about the industry.

1. How many years have you worked in real estate?

For 37 years. I’ve been a property manager, salesperson, the owner of my own real estate business, and have worked in corporate real estate, working with Michael O’Sullivan three times in different offices.

2. Current role?

Client Relationship Manager at Prudential Real Estate Campbelltown.

3. Your most memorable client story?

Too many over the years to pick one! But it’s always memorable to turn a bad situation around so that the end result is a happy experience for everyone. That’s positive and just as satisfying.

4. The best thing about working in property management?

The people that I work with.

5. One thing that’s taken you this long to learn about real estate?

Nothing ever ceases to amaze me. Just when you think you have seen or heard everything, something comes up that completely amazes you.

6. Something about the industry most people don’t know?

The industry is working to improve its educational and professional standards and rules are changing for the better. We’ll be seeing stricter licensing regulations for real estate agents who want to operate in Australia, which people will benefit from by having more experienced and qualified professionals to represent their home.

7. What advice would you give to the younger version of yourself just starting out?

Choose another career… only joking! Don’t take things too personally. People get very emotional whether buying, selling or renting, and if you get emotionally or personally involved you will never last the distance. Also you need to learn to say ‘no’.

8. If you had known then what you know now, what helpful property tips would you give to your clients?

Property owners need to maintain their properties to maintain or increase its value. So a repaint and new floor covering every 5 years should be part of an ongoing maintenance plan. It’s difficult when you are young and new to the industry to convey this information to owners.
